How to Pick a Fishing Spot?

Selecting the perfect fishing spot is crucial for a successful angling experience. Let's dive into the key considerations for choosing a location that maximizes your chances of a great catch.

Accessibility

For me, what truly elevates one fishing spot above another is its accessibility. A spot that's easy to get to, whether by a short hike or a well-maintained path, is always a winner in my book. More time fishing, less time travelling!

What to expect in Manitoba?

When fishing in Manitoba, you can anticipate a variety of catches depending on the location. In the rivers, expect to find Channel Catfish, Goldeye, Freshwater Drum, Common Carp, Suckerfish, Walleye/Sauger, and if you're incredibly lucky, even a Lake Sturgeon. In the lakes, Walleye, Northern Pike, and Bass are common catches.

My amazing fishing spot

I once discovered a fishing spot that ticked all the boxes: close to the city, ample room to set up rods, flat ground for comfortable fishing, and minimal snags in the water. It was the perfect combination for a relaxing and productive day of fishing!

Avoid the snags

A common mistake anglers make is fishing in areas with a high snag frequency. These spots can lead to lost tackle and frustration. Always assess the area for potential snags before casting your line to ensure a smoother fishing experience.

Pro Tip: During periods where the water level is low, check areas to see if rocks are showing, this can indicate whether or not you should fish the area. Also you can inspect the waterbodies bottom by dragging a "weight" across to feel the bottom.
